I have long been inspired by the artwork of the Old Masters, both painters and photographers. My artistic journey began in the photojournalism space in the mid-1970s, where I had the opportunity to cover political campaigns, including that of President Gerald Ford. Partnering with David Kennerly, President Ford's Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer, during Ford's visits to Florida provided once-in-a-lifetime training and experiences.
This year, I’m celebrating 50 years as a photographer. I have spent the morning just looking at old photos from some of those 50 years. I asked myself — what is it I have done right and what did I do wrong? What actions took me to this place? What I decided is that the concept of time in photography (usually just measured in hundredths of a second) is the most important thing.
Years after finishing school and working in different business environments, I surrendered to my creative side. I quickly discovered that I was happiest and most fulfilled when I was capturing captivating, personal images. By attending many different workshops over the years, I have been transported back in time. I’ve walked the same terrain of some of the great artists and photographed at some of the same locations around the world that they did their work at.
Time. But I am not really talking shutter speeds at all. I am talking about the larger concept of time and its relevance to photography as well as life in general. I don’t know all there is to know about time, but I do know it runs out. This year will end with several of my friends having passed away. Their time is up. So I can tell you that I fully understand that time can quickly be taken away. No matter who we are, our very existence here on this planet is something that will just one day end. Everything ends.
My images often reflect how I see the world and I often get lost in the creation. It starts from the many places I have been in my lifetime. These places give the work an initial direction, but the images take on a life of their own. Using different lenses & lighting techniques, as well as leaning heavily on the Chiaroscuro technique, I directly connect with the photograph. There is a kind of magic that happens when you are completely in the moment of capturing a fleeting image.
So I have decided with what precious time I have left — to stop thinking about it — time that is. I have decided to start thinking about — and living in — moments. The moments count. Those are what we protect with our cameras. It’s the one thing that distinguishes photography from video. You have hours to tell a story in a motion picture. You have one frame — one moment in still photography. I like the challenge.
A viewer’s enjoyment of my art is an individual experience. I provide the jumping-off point and then they take an interactive journey and are transported to their own special place. It’s a nice place to be.
My work is held in both private and corporate collections.
Celebrating 50 Years of Capturing Memories - Andy Fredlund's Photography Businesss
Reopens on Ft. Myers Beach
Ft. Myers Beach, FL - In 1975, Andy Fredlund embarked on a journey that would capture the essence of Ft. Myers Beach through the lens of his camera. Over the past 50 years, Andy's photography business has become a cherished part of the community, preserving the rich history and vibrant culture of this beloved beach town.
Despite the devastation caused by Hurricane Ian in 2022, which destroyed much of the local history and records, Andy's foresight in preserving his original negatives from 1975 has proven invaluable. As Ft. Myers Beach rebuilds, local waterfront eateries are clamoring for historic images to meet the demands of tourists seeking an authentic experience.
Andy Fredlund's photography business is set to reopen this year, offering a treasure trove of historic images in multiple formats, including wall mural-sized prints of the iconic Fort Myers Beach Shrimp Fleet. These images will not only adorn the walls of local establishments but also serve as a testament to the enduring spirit of Ft. Myers Beach.
Marie Olsen, FMB.Photos Media Director, expressed her excitement about the reopening, stating, "We feel that our 50 years of local presence, as well as owning the great collection of original images, positions us at a pinnacle, allowing us to assist local businesses with their media campaigns and support Lee County and Ft. Myers Beach tourism."
As Andy Fredlund's photography business reopens, it promises to bring a sense of nostalgia and authenticity to Ft. Myers Beach, capturing the hearts of both locals and tourists alike.
